Things you need to know about the trading day today:


  1. Jobless Claims Fall More than Expected, Down 50,000 to 325,000
  2. Housing Starts Fall More than Expected, Down 4.1% Vs. 0.6% Est.
  3. Consumer Price Index Up 0.1%; Core Up 0.1% 
  4. Philadelphia Fed Index continues to show improvement, and rises to 7.3 in January from 6.8 in December.
  5. Bank of America matched profit expectations and exceeded revenue estimates for 4th quarterly earnings.
  6. Morgan Stanley Morgan Stanley posted losses in the fourth quarter due to a lawsuit against them, but performed better than analysts had expected, sending its shares higher in premarket trading.
  7. Ebay, Xilinx and F5 networks were all up in after hour trading yesterday after reporting their earnings. Ebay also received a buy rating from Goldman sachs today.

  9. France and Spain sold 14.6 billion euros of bonds, with both nations’ funding costs falling in the first sale of long-term debt since S & P downgraded their ratings.France sold 7.97 billion euros of notes, with the average yield on the benchmark two-year notes sliding to 1.05 percent from 1.58 percent in October. Spain sold 6.61 billion euros in bonds maturing in 2022, 2019 and 2016, more than its maximum target of 4.5 billion euros. It issued 10 year bonds at an average of 5.403 percent, down from 6.975 percent in November.
  10. Arcelor-Mittal(MT) downgraded to "neutral" at HSBC, but shares up in pre-market trading.
